Shout out for The Oatmeal

In case you’ve missed this gem of a story (or at Laughing Squid) The Oatmeal (a darn sharp satire website by Mathew Inman) is collecting money for charity instead of giving in to pressure from a lawyer who is trying to sue him for satirical comments, and countering the “damage” which Inman’s publicity caused – despite illegally making money from Inman’s work.

If that sounds strange, then you’ve got it right. It is as misguided as it is bizarre.

The outcome is that Inman’s campaign has raised over $100,000 for charities, and the website who stole his work will (hopefully) see none of it. The Oatmeal’s work is priceless, and well worth a look if you like clever, odd, slightly off colour, or satirical cartoons.

IMHO this is Cartoonist vs Greedmonger at its best.

FunnyJunk’s lawyer, Charles Carreon said, “I’m completely unfamiliar really with this style of responding to a legal threat — I’ve never really seen it before”. Perhaps he’ll think twice about it next time huh?
